With the cost of household essentials like food and fuel rising, high unemployment as well as the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic which has exposed the extent of food poverty in the diverse communities, Butetown Community Association set up a Community Food Pantry to offer a longer term and more sustainable solution for Covid recovery for community.
Members are able to buy culturally appropriate food, fresh fruit and vegetables and essential items at a heavily reduced price thus helping them to manage their budgets and move out of food insecurity with dignity, and reduced isolation. There is a further reduced rate for Asylum Seekers with no recourse to public funds.
The Pantry takes a holistic approach to health and wellbeing by offering advice, classes and activities to promote healthier life choices such as adapting traditional cultural meals into healthier versions with less fat, sugar or salt, how to manage diabetes, and cooking on a budget as well as tackling social isolation and mental health and wellbeing.

Covid-19 Pandemic Services
During the Covid-19 Global Pandemic, the Community Centre remained open, local people responded quickly and rallied around to volunteer wherever needed. We ensured that we were available to serve and support the community and the most vulnerable by providing advice, support and free weekly emergency food boxes to over 300 people on a weekly basis from May 2020-April 2021.
The Centre became the hub for not only the emergency food box scheme but home to the clothes bank, essential items and baby equipment which was given away free to families in need.
Butetown Community Centre has a long history of welcoming migrants to Wales, working within and alongside Commonwealth communities. We provide culturally appropriate services that support local communities and are accessible and inclusive to all including the original, older Windrush generation with whom we have had a long-standing association since the 1960s.
The Butetown Windrush Awareness Project uses celebration events and information sessions to engage with participants,
their captivating and engaging personal stories inspire, inform and encourage others to seek advice and help with immigration, documentation or compensation claims.
